Traveling to Mexico is one of the most popular international travel destinations in Latin America. It’s home to spectacular beaches, fascinating blending of pre-colonial civilization with European architecture and traditions, and of course, incredible food. It’s a huge, diverse country with something for everyone.

Before heading to Mexico, be sure you research the current state of affairs – some areas are dangerous or unsafe and it’s important to stay away. Make sure you take time to explore cities and regions within the country, including the countryside. It’s also helpful to keep friends and family up to date on your travel plans and only use authorized taxis (look for the “Taxi Autorisados” sign).

My favorite day bag is the Osprey Daylite, which has been my go-to for years and will easily accommodate all your belongings. Be sure to include a few laundry bags in your packing so you can separate your dirty and clean items on the road. You’ll also want to carry a first aid kit, some prescription medications you may need, and any over-the-counter drugs for common ailments like diarrhea, headache, colds, and allergy relief.
